@Will - Yes it is about cuts but also an attempt to shift power in the democratic process, or rather (perhaps inadvertently) away from it.
@Julian Sorry I missed your event, I noticed from twitter that it seemed to go well! Look forward to more good things from Our Society. Did you cover any of these sort of questions?
@Nana - Sieze the opportunity why not! :) Yes it's true a lot of the evidence has been and will be anecdotal. My worry is that there is no thought as to the democratic implications of this agenda and particularly the possibility of corruption. How many of these groups are so heavily funded but disconnected from ordinary people and their interests, and not really achieving much.

Hey Jana, just agreeing with waht you say. I've been asking myself these same questions. I've been to 2 or 3 talks since January in my local areas surrounding big society and BME communities in Gloucester and it's really disappointing as a 'philosophy' and a 'state of mind' (as described by 2 conservative politicians some of these meetings) In one way, axing some services may very well be a necessity, but to ask people deprived of those services to volunteer and take charge of their neighbourhoods, is asking many hurt and broken people for more than they should give right now. I feel the voluntary sector (formal and informal) is going to be really exploited by this kind of politics. I think it's unfair of the government to spin the idea like it's a 'for-us-by-us' initiative, when it is really an opportunity for the government to wash its hands off of some of its necessary and essential responsibilities. I haven't a clue what the localism bill will finally look like, but many groups in British society aren't in good enough shape yet to exercise their right to challenge the government in a constructive manner. So when we hear about these BS success stories, that is all they come across as being: anecdotes that don't show the full extent of BS not working... just some thoughts, seizing the opportunity to vent! Thanks Jana

I've only just come across this post and you make some excellent points. You may be interested in Our Society's big society reality check next Thursday, which will try to provide more of the detailed critique you're looking for - see http://bigcheck.eventbrite.com/

Great points Jana! I think the whole concept has necessarily been kept opaque, vague and bland to facilitate not having to over explain what is quintessentially a wishy washy cover for a steep lurch in our political and social reality... alas this is manifested in cuts that will by their very nature attack those most reliant on help to lead a life of basic dignity!
